So Randy is ready now to start eating solids. I want to make my own and keep it organic if I can. We have a food mill, but not sure if I should start out w/ store bought stuff first. Fruits or greens? Do babies need to start out w/ oatmeal or rice cereal? Yes, we will be going to the Dr. this next week. I was just thinking I would maybe give him a taste. Thanks all.

You don’t have to start with store bought stuff!
Also, there is no need for rice cereal.

You don;t HAVE to use cereal at all. It’s just the least allergenic.I made my sons baby food and will be making my daughter’s soon. wholesomebabyfood.com is a great site. It gives you guideline as to when they are ready for certain food. It also tells you how to make homemade baby cereal and teething biscuits! Great site!

Making your own baby food is the ONLY way to go (in my opinion). I do however, recommend that you buy rice cereal because it’s hard to get the right consistency if you make it on your own…but you don’t need it, especially if you’re nursing! I used my blender to whip up all sorts of things in large quantity. I used ice-cube trays to freeze my babe’s meals, then once frozen, would pop them out into a Zip-loc or Tupperware to store. I started both my girls out on organic squash, sweet potato, and pumpkin (they loved pumpkin…so good for them too!), but would only try out one food at a time, for about 5 days or so to make sure they didn’t have any reactions to the goodies.
Directions for Yummy Pumpkin Mash:
2-3 cups boiled, pumpkin (leave skin on, then peel afterwards)
Combination of breastmilk and water used to cook pumpkin (to desired thickness)
Whip it up in the blender on high for about 3 minutes (or until smooth) and you’ll have gobs of yummy pumpkin mash to freeze up for a few weeks of use! You can use this same recipe with any veggie or fruit, and don’t be afraid to mix things up by mixing things like: sweet potato and bananas! Be creative and have fun knowing that you’re doing the best thing by making your own baby food!

Homemade organic Fruit Purees are the best.Pureeing your own fruits is a cost effective way to feed your baby
You can try with your own homemade food first cos the stuff they sell in stores usually contain preservatives.
Purchase fruit at your local grocery store and prepare it by cleaning it. You can achieve this by running the fruit under water and in some cases peeling its skin.
Chop the fruit into bite size pieces. The smaller the pieces the less time it will take to cook and make smooth
Put the clean, chopped fruit into a sauce pan, put enough water in the sauce pan to completely submerse the fruit. Place the pan on the stove and bring the mixture to a boil. Be sure that you are stirring the mixture occasionally so as not to burn it or have it stuck on the bottom.
Crush the cooked fruit with a potato masher or if you do not have a masher use a fork to mash the fruit. This is to get the biggest chunks out of the mixture.
Put the cooked, mashed fruit into a food processor or blender. Begin pureeing the mixture until there are no chunks left, attempt to make it as smooth as possible.
Add the liquid that was leftover from cooking the fruit to the mixture to help achieve desired consistency.
Allow the pureed fruit to become room temperature or cooler before giving it to your baby. Refrigerate any leftovers.
I love making apple puree.try that!=)

I just go to the store and but regular veggies/fruit and then puree it in the blends or use a food masher and then give it to her.
