Comment posted Organic Baby Cereals? by Obber.

Whether the rice is grown with or without pesticides, baby rice cereal is still junk. Heavily processed starch with a vitamin pill stirred in. Better to use real food.

Take rice cereal, for example. Under conventional American wisdom, it’s the best first food. But Butte says iron-rich meat — often one of the last foods American parents introduce — would be a better choice.

Dr. David Ludwig of Children’s Hospital Boston, a specialist in pediatric nutrition, says some studies suggest rice and other highly processed grain cereals actually could be among the worst foods for infants.

These foods are in a certain sense no different from adding sugar to formula. They digest very rapidly in the body into sugar, raising blood sugar and insulin levels and could contribute to later health problems, including obesity, he says.

  • We used Earth’s Best Organic Rice Cereal. They actually have other grains if you prefer to start with a different type. They were really the only option at my local grocer.

Just have patience when starting solids, some days my baby ate the cereal other days she turned up her nose. Over time she will get it.

Also yes, I wholeheartedly believe organic foods are better for your growing baby. She doesn’t need the pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, etc. in her rapidly developing systems. Because of their body weight and inability to flush the toxins out as quickly, newborns and toddlers benefit from organic foods more than we do. Aside from that organic produce is being proven more nutritious.

  • Organic foods are the way to go, I recommend using them whenever possible. I used Earth’s Best whole grain rice cereal for babies. My kids loved this one!!

As for veggies and fruits, there are a bunch of orgnaic brands, even gerber has orgnaic now I think, but I recommend that you try to make your baby food as much as possible. The cereal you cant really help but buy, but the veggies and fruits are not only cheaper on you to make, but probably more nutritious. Just get a food processor and steam the fruits and veggies before puree.

  • I decided to buy organic as I was under the impression that babies were supposed to have, as their first solids, the most hypoallergenic thing you could find. That’s why you give them rice cereal and then move on to other foods once they get used to that and have no adverse reactions. The Heinz brand has olive oil, soyabean lecithin, malt extract etc., so I don’t know how it could be plain enough. I use My Organic Baby, it’s a little more expensive, but she only gets to try food for the first time once.

  • We use Earth’s Best Baby cereals and solids. It is fantastic and my son loves it. Keep an eye on the ingredients, as long as they say organic…it should be organic. There are some jars that look like organics but are really not, based on ingredients.

  • Heinz Organics are great and they have a variety of flavors available. Highly recommend them.
