anonymous asked:

We certainly love fried foods; fries, chicken, fish, corn dogs, donuts, even veggies are battered and deep fried. Lunches and dinners are often accompanied with potato chips, corn chips, tortilla chips, and they are eaten as snacks.

The FDA estimates the average American eats 4.7 pounds of trans fats each year.

And that is just the amount that the fried foods absorb!

What about the majority of the oil that stays in the fryer? Though rarely done, and depending on use, this oil may need to be replaced many times a day. Once it is spent anything cooked in it tastes funky. Alas, most of the time fresh oil is added to the spent oil. Eventually though, it all gets replaced.

Ever wonder what becomes of the used fry oil?

The law requires all restaurants to have grease traps. The more fried food, the faster they fill up. Grease removal is big business. But what do the Grease Haulers do with it?

What do you think of when you hear the term “Recycling”. Only good things, right?

The haulers make even more money recycling the grease from these traps. Sounds good so far, right? What could this rancid, carcinogenic goop possibly be used for- an alternative fuel source perhaps? No, not exactly.

What could possibly be worse than ingesting 4.7 pounds of trans-fat oils per year?

A dirty little secret of the dry pet food industry is that they buy the haulers oil and spray it on dry pet food! What- Why? To give this otherwise tasteless high temperature extruded, nutrition-less bulk some flavor! If you stick your hand into the dry food you will get this oil residue all over it.

Whether you own cats and dogs, or not, spend a few minutes in the pet “food” section of your grocery store. The first thing you will notice is that this section is more like an entire aisle.

The competition for the pet food dollar is fierce. Each company outdoing the next with ever more eye catching packaging. If their combined advertising budgets went into the actual product, cats and dogs would be a whole lot healthier!

Check out the ingredients. If you have any kind of working knowledge of nutrition you will be appalled at what every one of these companies is calling food. And if that is not bad enough, the so-called vitamins and minerals they include are the poorest quality, least beneficial, made from coal tar.

Do not think for a minute that canned foods or that all so-called natural pet foods or are much better; they are not!

If you are wondering why the FDA has not stepped in, the fact is most of the human foods on grocery store shelves are as bad. It would seem that the FDA is just another feel good government agency that is little more than a toothless tiger.

No wonder tens-of-millions of cats and dogs have similar diseases to humans. We are eating much of the same diet.

“Fully 90% of all disease is caused by an unhealthy intestinal system”

Royal Society of Medicine Great Britain

The more things you eat that are not healthy, the greater the probability you will become unhealthy!

The good news: Most diseases can be reversed, especially in pets. Why pets more than us? Well, they can not cheat on their diet.

Your pet’s optimum diet is really quite basic. To know what is best for them you only have to observe their wild relatives whose diet consists of fresh kill, supplemented with grasses and dirt.

Cats and dogs instinctively eat grass and dirt for the microflora and soil based microorganisms (SBOs) that are essential digestive aids. Due to pesticides, insecticides, chemical run off, and chlorinated lawn water, today these essential soil and grass digestive aids are non-existent.

Whatever diet your cats and dogs are currently on, slowly introduce a more natural diet. Feed them raw or lightly cooked grass fed meats, free range chicken and wild fish (not farm raised!) that are preferably organic as well as antibiotic and hormone free.

Supplement this more natural diet with essential digestive enzymes, omega 3 rich oils and SBOs formulated specifically for cats and dogs. If your cat or dog is sickly or diseased, you must also introduce soothing agents and anti-inflammatories.

Annie asked:

Trying to reduce your carbon footprint or the four little footprints from your pet can be difficult, especially during tough economic times. But it is times like these where you have to be a little more creative and do a little extra research to discover there are plenty of ways to be Eco-friendly when it comes to taking care of your pet. Here are a few simple ways to do this:

Adopt- Adopting is cost-effective and may even save the life of a pet. The animals can come in a variety of breeds and most are healthy vet-approved pets. Along with this, get your pets spayed or neutered. Over 70,000 pets are born each day in the U.S. alone and there just aren’t enough pet lovers out there to take care of all of them.

Be Inventive - Make your pet’s toys for instead of buying them. Many pet toys contain chemicals that are not intended to be ingested. Small amounts of these chemicals over time can be damaging to your pet. Use durable organic materials from old clothes and a sewing machine to transform something old into something inexpensive, safe and fun for your pet.

No More Lint Rollers - Instead use Fur-Zoff. Fur-Zoff is an Eco-friendly product that removes pet hair from all types of fabrics at http://www.FurZoff.net. It’s made of 90% recycled materials and a lifetime guarantee. So you pretty much get the bang for your buck with this one for $10 and you’re not being wasteful going through all of those sticky sheets.

Change That Litter – Switch to using a biodegradable cat litter or baggies for dog. You’ll reduce the amount of waste in landfills or you can even use it as compost for your garden. It doesn’t sound very pleasant but it sure does make the flowers bloom!

Green for Dinner – Try natural and organic pet foods. They are hormone free, contain vitamins, and spell out how each ingredient is processed right on the packaging. If organic food isn’t in the budget these days there are dozens of easy recipes you can make for your pet with ingredients you would find in your own kitchen. A good website would be http://www.simplypets.com/pet-recipes/.

Each and every effort you can make towards becoming “green” is not only healthy for the environment but extremely healthy for your pet. You’re little, or big, guy will feel better, live longer, and be more then appreciate of the effort you’re making. It’s not difficult to become a “green” pet owner; you just have to start somewhere!

Jane Dinunzio asked:

anic Dry Dog Food

The best, ultra premium organic dog food is Karma Organic Dry Dog Food, as they use over 95% organic ingredients in their dry dog kibble. Although they do not have a line of canned dog food, and just sell Karma Organic Dry Dog Food, it is the best choice if you want to eliminate chemicals, artificial preservatives, unnecessary additives, meat that is not fit for consumption, unhealthy fillers and in some cheap brands – road kill.

Karma Organic Dry Dog Food is the only dog food manufacturing company that can boast the over 95% organic ingredients. It also contains 18 certified organic ingredients and is made with organic whole fruits and vegetables – not dried. And just to add the perfect touch to their all natural organic environmentally friendly philosophy, they use packaging made with 100% recyclable material. Did you know that 95% organic ingredients are considered human grade food?

They provide 100% complete nutrition, and the ingredients list starts with number one being Organic Free Range Chicken, and continues like a menu in a health food restaurant. Changing your dog from the cheap grocery store brand to this highly organic dog food can be nothing but good, and will eliminate many of the health problems, allergies and illnesses caused by the food containing fillers, pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, GMO grains and all the nasty artificial preservatives and additives.

Although this is pricier than most, money saved by reducing health problems, and just the fact that you will be extending your dogs life seem to be worth the extra few dollars.

Newman’s Own Organics Pet Food

This pet food has more than 70% of all ingredients being organic. They use human grade all natural chicken and organic brown rice, and it is supplemented with high levels of antioxidants, Ester-C and probiotics.

Newman’s Own Organics pet foods do not use herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers and is not irradiated, and do not contain chemical additives or preservatives. The ingredients are handled according to strict organic standards.

Newman’s Own Organics come in a variety of sizes of dry dog and cat food, and they also offer canned dog and cat food, as well as Newman’s Own Organics Dog Treats.

The 30% of ingredients that are non organic are still high grade ingredients that are completely safe, nutritious, all natural, and free of unnecessary fillers or harmful additives.

Natural Planet Organics Dry Dog Food

Natural Planet Organics does not list the percentage of organic to non organic ingredients, but its main ingredients are organic, and the rest are all natural.

Natural Planet Organics is certified organic dog food and classified by the company as Ultra Premium. Organic free range chicken is the first ingredient listed.

They also use organic grains, organic vegetables and organic fruits.

Additionally natural antioxidants are added, along with pre and probiotics, and an excellent combination of important supplemental vitamins and minerals for optimum health. Also glucosamine and chondroitin and high levels of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and taurine, which are essential, are also included.

You will find there are no harmful preservatives, added chemicals or fillers, that are invariably found listed as ingredients of lesser quality brand kibble. The ingredient list is easily read, and there are no complex chemically sounding words. I always believe if I can’t pronounce it, I wouldn’t want to eat it. This also goes for my pets, and this organic food meets “my rule.”

This organic food is offered as dry kibble only, for dogs and cats, and well worth the few extra dollars it may cost over less natural dog food.

Peace of mind, and confidence that you are giving your pet the best food available on the market today comes when you choose any of the above three all natural, certified organic dog foods. You will not have to worry about compromising your pet’s health, just as you don’t compromise your own family. After all, our pets are a very important part of our family, and giving them the best advantages of health and longer lives is up to us.

Kevin A asked:

Are dogs and cats immune to salmonella contamination? The answer is no! Your family pets are just as susceptible to contracting salmonellosis as human beings. Pets can also be carriers of salmonella increasing the risk of cross contamination between pets and human beings. In the light of the recent peanut butter product recall, companies that offer organic pet products and have GMP-certified manufacturing units are finding themselves in higher demand.

The recent scandal and scare of contaminated peanut butter products have driven consumers to think twice about the products they purchase and the manufacturing practices employed by companies. Can they be trusted? How can a consumer ensure that the product purchased is safe for consumption for the entire family, including the family pet? Many consumers now feel safer choosing products that are organic-certified and are produced by a GMP-certified company. This ensures high standards of quality control and quality assurance.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the recent salmonella contamination originated from a plant in Georgia that produces peanut products in mass production to sell in bulk to various distributors. As a result, more than hundreds of companies have recalled their products from the shelves. The FDA reported that the Georgia-based manufacturing plant was “not compliant with current good manufacturing practices required by the FDA”. They also reported lack of quality control measures in cleaning procedures and failure on the company’s part to take action for mitigating contamination in their facility.

The contamination has led to serious cases of salmonella infections. All-out efforts are being taken to contain the infection by public awareness and recalling products that can trace their peanut-related ingredient to the Georgia-based plant in question. A number of Pet products containing peanut paste from this plant have also been recalled.

Organic Pet Products—A Quality Choice

With a broad spectrum of choices for organic pet products, more consumers are turning to organic pet products which, they feel, can be fully trusted for safety and health.

A broad category of organic pet products include:

Organic Dog Food / Cat Food

Organic Pet Treats

Grain-Free Pet Foods

Dry Pet Foods

Canned Pet Foods

Low Fat Pet Foods

Senior Pet Foods

Puppy Treats

Organic Gourmet Foods

Organic Grooming and Hygiene for Pets

Organic Pet Flea Treatments…

… and more!

There’s an endless variety of options for organic pet products. The trend towards Organic products, even in organic pet foods is continually on the rise.

Premium Organic Pet Product Manufacturing

If you are pet product manufacturer using a contract manufacturer to produce your products, the recent peanut butter product recall should raise a red flag. Is your contract manufacturer following strict GMPs? Are raw materials being inspected for quality before being taken into the facility for production? Are there quality control measures in place in every stage of production? No one wants a lawsuit to deal with and the price to pay is irrecoverable in terms of loss of reputation and other legal hassles.

If you find manufacturing facilities questionable, you may want to consider shifting your business to an organic, GMP-certified contract manufacturer for your pet product manufacturing. Placing your manufacturing needs with a GMP-certified contract manufacturer leaves you free to focus on expanding and enhancing your business.

Rising Demand for Organic Pet Products

Organic pet products have shown a steady rise in demand over the last decade.

According to Global Industry Analysts, Inc. the attitudes of pet owners are changing. A growing number of pet owners consider their household pets as a part of the family and entitled to equal benefits with other members of the family. More pet owners are concerned with health and nutrition for their pets. This has led to the pet food sector being the fastest rising in the food industry. Pet owners are looking specifically for preservative-free organic, natural products that offer high quality nutrition and health for their pets.

More consumers realize they have more control over health and nutrition issues for their pets by choosing products that are organic and produced by a reliable company. Good health and nutrition are worth the price.

Madeleine Innocent asked:

Most people are aware of the benefits of organic food, which is food grown without chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Nutrient content is much richer. Although supermarket food looks good, generally, its nutrient content is very poor.

If organic food is good for people, is it also good for dogs?

A resounding YES, is the answer to that…

But!

There’s always a but isn’t there?

You need to look at the whole picture.

If you are buying the commercial organic dog food, then you really aren’t getting what you’re paying for.

Why not?

If you look at what goes into commercial dog food, the benefits that the organic origins give to the food are swamped by all the other chemicals.

Let’s look at the meat content of dog food first. The source for the bulk of commercial pet food comes from rendering plants. These take the waste from slaughter houses (heads, hooves, intestines, etc), road kill, euthanised pets from vets and zoos and dead animals from farms. If the slaughter house rejects come from some organic farms, that’s helpful. But the overall mix is far from organic.

Even if the protein comes from organic waste meat, is that meat certified organic, or has the supplier just put an organic label on the packet to lure in unsuspecting buyers?

So the end product should be certified organic dog food. Not just one ingredient.

Now lets look at the dried food. Meat (or more likely meat by-products, the end product from rendering plants) is kept indefinitely at room temperature. The only way you can do this is by adding a strong preservative.

As there are no laws governing the quality of dog food in most countries, any preservative can be used. Even those considered unfit for consumption. Such as ethoxyquin. And formaldehyde.

Both these preservatives cause huge health problems simply by being in contact with them. Imagine what it does to your dog’s health if he consumes them, and on a regular basis.

That alone makes the idea of organic dog food of little importance.

Even when the label on the packet proudly proclaims that no preservatives have been added, they are simply stating that they haven’t added preservatives. The rendering plant may have done it for them.

Logic tells you that meat cannot be kept indefinitely at room temperature any other way.

Because the rendering plants boil the ‘food’ for long periods at high pressures, there is little nutrient content left.

To address this shortfall, isolated and synthetic nutrients are added. Neither humans nor dogs can utilise isolated and synthetic nutrients. These should come from the food, in a complex and balanced form.

I suggest that organic dog food is no different from any other commercial pet food.

Jasper Sayer asked:

Are you a pet owner? If you are, you likely take steps to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy. Unfortunately, many pet owners find it difficult to do so, especially where food is concerned. In April of 2007, a large pet food recall left many pet owners wondering what they should feed their pets. Although time has passed since that recall, many pet owners still second guess their decision to feed their pets “traditional,” pet foods. If you are one of those pet owners, consider feeding your pet organic pet food.

One of the many questions that pet owners have concerning organic pet food is if it really does exist. It does. Right now, a large number of organic pet food sellers are independently run operations, also commonly known as small to medium sized businesses. With that being said, a large number of pet food companies are now developing lines of organic pet foods, especially for dogs and cats. This means that many pet owners now have a relatively large selection of organic pet foods to choose from. This is a surprising fact for many, as some pet owners never knew that there was such a thing as organic pet food.

As nice as it is to hear that organic pet food does exist, many wonder why they should give it to their pets. After a close examination, you will see that there are a number of reasons why organic pet food is advised. One of those reasons is that organic foods, including foods for pets, are natural, safe, and healthy. When feeding your pet organic pet food, you do not have to worry about chemicals in the foods, including harmful chemicals or otherwise safe chemicals with harmful amounts. Most organic food companies have strict restrictions that they must follow. These restrictions may include no chemicals on or near the production line. This can help to eliminate errors or confusion.

Since there are a number of benefits to feeding pets organic pet foods, many pet owners start examining their options. Unfortunately, many are turned away by the costs. Yes, organic pet food does cost more, even with human food, but it is more than worth the cost. If you love your pet and if you want to keep them happy and healthy, organic pet food should be more than worth the cost. In fact, many devoted pet owners are willing to pay the extra money to just get the comfort and peace of mind that is commonly associated with natural, organic foods.

If this is the first time that you are looking to buy organic pet food for your pets, you may be curious as to how you can go about doing so. If you are interested shopping locally, you are urged to visit one of your local pet supply stores. Since these stores specialize solely in pets, you are likely to find the largest selection of organic pet foods. Other options involve supermarkets and department stores; however, they may only have a limited selection of organic pet foods, if they even have any at all.

As nice as it is to be able to purchase organic pet food locally, you may find the best results with shopping online. You can easily find organic pet food for sale online. What is nice about shopping for organic pet food online is that you are often present with a large selection of products. In fact, online you will see that a large number of websites that sell organic pet food products are actually run by individuals who just have a love for pets. You can find these websites with a standard internet search.

As previously stated, there are a number of benefits to switching your pet or pets to organic foods. In addition to organic pet foods, did you know that you can also purchase other organic items for your pet? You can and these items can include pet treats and pet toys.
